Sometimes being in the fashion industry can be a roller coaster ride.  Unless your business is a tourist destination or depends on outdoor summer events, you're probably happy to see Labor Day come and the summer over.   So am I because now we have a bucket full of niche markets coming our way that will have consumers out shopping.

 

Already women are shopping for homecoming hats and jewelry as well as fall church hats.  Football is here--are there any more avid fans than football fans?  That means licensed jewelry for college and the NFL, school colors and mascots for high school, and craft supplies for the do-it-yourselfers. 

 

Halloween is drawing near calling for masks, novelty hats, plus Halloween jewelry and accessories.  And some shops are already buying Christmas jewelry, scarves, and neckties.  Don't forget October is breast cancer awareness month.  Also winter hats and scarves are in demand as soon as the weather turns cold.  Things are looking better, aren't they?  So here's what's new.

Now that we are in a good mood thinking about all that business that could be coming our way, let's start with a fun item--masks.  Over the past decade the rise of Venetian masks has added a new dimension to the mask business.  Masks were once limited to party stores, but the art of Venetian style masks expands the market.  Who would have ever thought of masks in bridal shops?  Well the elegance of Venetian style masks has inspired Venetian weddings and yes, bridal shops are buying. 

 

Venetian masks are an art that is always innovating.  The latest rage is laser cut metal masks.  These carry the look (and the price) to a new level, but customers want them and price doesn't stop them.  The mask shown carries the highest wholesale price tag in the line--$29.00.  A year ago we would be afraid to offer wholesale masks at this price, but half of the shipment has already sold so there definitely is a market. 

 

Not everyone wants such exquisite masks.  Some of your customers are going to have parties and need a quantity of affordable masks.  Turn to feather mask and masquerade masks to fill their needs.  The price range here is from 40 cents to $3.75 and there are plenty of elegant masks in the selection.  If you don't think this is your market, buy a few nice masks for decoration and see your customers' reaction.

pink ribbon bracelet 91 October will see an outpouring of compassion and volunteers to raise breast cancer awareness and to raise money for a cure.  Those involved want to broadcast their concern and pink ribbon jewelry and accessories gives them a way to do it.  I can't think of any fundraising effort that equals breast cancer awareness.  One reason is it touches lots of families.  The stakes are high--it's moms, wives, sisters, and daughters.  My own Mom was a survivor. So of all the items we carry, we are most careful to keep breast cancer awareness jewelry and accessories tasteful and classic. 

  

The movement started in 1990 and went nationwide thanks to Estee Lauder.  Avon was soon involved followed by a host of companies including the NFL last year. This morning I bought a bag of popcorn at Wal-Mart with the proceeds going to breast cancer research.  In New Orleans alone, the Susan G Komen Society contributed $475,000 this year to local grants. 

  

Is all this activity and support doing any good?  You bet it is.  American Cancer Society statistics show a dramatic increase in those that have had screenings during the last two years in all economic levels. The most dramatic increases are among the poor. This is fundraising dollars at work and this is raising awareness. The jewelry and accessories your customers buy delivers a message with fashion. Everyone knows the meaning of the pink ribbon and everyone that sees it is reminded to get a screening because early detection is everything.

Feeding the Frenzy of the Fans

Coast to coast, football galvanizes the attention of the country every weekend during the season--Friday night is high school, Saturday college, and Sunday the NFL.  And are these fans ever avid!  Well, you are the one they depend on to feed the local frenzy for football jewelry and accessories.

High Schools are the most challenging when it comes to providing jewelry and accessories for football fans.  The three easiest options are school colors, school mascots, and generic football jewelry.  School color bracelets are an item we have had success with for years.  They are a stretch bracelet with10 mm glass beads in combinations of popular school colors.  Often you can go to charms under fashion jewelry on the site and find a mascot charm to add to the bracelet and make it really specialized for your high school. 

 

Another idea is to find your mascot by putting a simple word in the singular into the search on the site.  It will bring up everything with that word in the title--pendants, bracelets, charms, and pins.  Choose chokers found under fashion jewelry in the menu to go with the pendants.  Then you can add loose beads to the choker to get the school colors and again have fashion jewelry focused on your local high school.  Why do all of this?  Because most likely no one else will and you will be the only game in town. 

 

Finally, using generic sports jewelry is easy and lets your customers show their support for the sport. Football fans are passionate so if you provide the jewelry they want, it sells itself.

Everybody congratulate yourselves--we have made it through the summer-a summer that was more challenging than most.  Now we 
are at the beginning of a nice stretch of opportunities for the fashion industry.  We wish smooth sailing to everyone for the next several months. 

 

A final word on getting people into your store.  The last few months we have focused on local search with Google+ and Google Places for Business.  Yahoo and Bing also have local search for business.  Positive reviews seem to be important for ranking well.  Search for your product with the name of your town and see if you or anyone comes up under local search. 

 

You have some loyal customers.  Ask them to write a review telling what they like about your shop.  Yahoo has a button to click for a review and also lets you upload pictures.  Bing also lets you update your information.  Why do all this?  Because more and more sales in a brick and mortar business are beginning with a search on line.  More free or nearly free ways to get people into your store next month.
